Clean-up efforts underway for parts of Socorro-World Mission Society Church of God

It's been close to four months since heavy rains pummeled the Borderland and hit Socorro hard.
The floodwaters are gone, but city clean-up is still a priority.

"Since September, no one has forgotten what has happened and this is just a continuation of the effort," said Willie Norfleet Jr., Socorro city manager.

The devastating floods that ripped through Socorro may have passed.
But efforts to clean up the city are still well underway.

"We've got five or six lots scheduled for cleanup and this is the first one," Norfleet said.

Dozens from the World Mission Society Church of God partnered with the city and tackled this site Sunday.

"The more attention that you give to areas like this, or locations like this, then the less likely people are willing to come and toss exactly where you just cleaned up from," Norfleet said.

The property and home are abandoned.

"Inside the house there was a lot of abandoned couches, furniture, so everything that you see right behind me is, most of it is out but we still have a lot of work to do," said Uriel Acuna, a church volunteer.

Norfleet said this is a prime spot for people to dump debris and the vegetation is out of control.

"So it's really an effort to build a community through cleaning up and beautification and removing potentially hazardous situation or unsightly areas," Norfleet said.

This isn't the first time the church of God has helped out with city clean-up and it won't be the last.

"I'm very excited. I love to help out. I love to share love with everyone. I can say the same for all the members here. They all love to help," Acuna said.
