Church tackles clean-up

Members of the World Mission Society Church of God have celebrated the restoration of their earthquake-damaged church with a clean-up campaign around the Shirley area.

The repaired church at the corner of North Parade and New Brighton Rd, was officially reopened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sunday November 24.

Pastor James Kim said to mark the church's reopening after $1.4 million of strengthening work it was decided to hold a clean-up on the same day "so that we can lift up and refresh and brighten the community".

About 80 volunteers collected more than 90 plastic bags full of rubbish from the area bounded by North Parade, Shirley Rd, New Brighton Rd and Marshland Rd.

Pastor Kim said the original church building was built in 1918 and had been part of the community for almost 100 years.

"Our church has been restored as the way it was before the earthquake with the great improvement of a new tower," he said.

Many people who had been associated with the church over the years would be pleased it had been restored, Pastor Kim said.

The World Mission Society Church of God was founded in Korea in 1964 and today has 2500 churches in 175 countries.  Its Christ church chapter was established in 2007 and has about 150 members.

Members of the WMSCOG believe in Christ Ahnsahnghong and God the Mother and follow the teachings of Elohim.
